Summary

The occurrence of the foramen ovale patens was observed in 1514 pigs of six different breeds, killed at the Station for Checking the Quality of Meat and Fat. Our results showed that the incidence of this cardiac defect differed from breed to breed. The higher incidence was recorded in our breeds than in imported ones.
The highest number with this cardiac defect was recorded in Slovak Black-Pied (14.28 %), then in Slovak White Improved pigs (6.61 %), Landrace (5.06 %) and Hampshire (2.02 %). However, no incidence of the foramen ovale patens was found in Pietrain and crossbreds Duroc x Slovak White Improved. Of the breeds observed with the cardiac defect, the most openings of maximal size (3 mm) were found in Slovak Black-Pied pigs.
