Summary

Investigations were carried out to observe the influence of long-term peroral administration of thyreostatic preparation 1-carbaetoxy-3-methyl-2-thioimidazoline (Carbimazol Spofa, Slovakofarma) on the level of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), in blood serum, the morphological picture of the testes; and the quality of ram seminal fluid.
The concentrations of T3 varied reaching values close to the lower physiological limit and the concentrations of T4 decreased to the hypothyroid level.
The morphological picture of testes of sexually mature hypothyroid rams, observed by means of light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, points to the disturbances in the course of spermatogenesis. The cytoplasm of Sertoli cells showed accumulation of lipid droplets. The degeneration of some germ cells could be observed and the lumen of seminiferous tubules contained peeled-off immature cells of seminiferous epithelium.
No marked changes were observed in the volume or density of seminal fluid while the motility of sperms was slightly reduced. Marked increase in the occurrence of abnormal sperms was detected in experimental rams in comparison with control.

Key words: Carbimazol (Spofa); ram testes; seminal fluid; triiodothyronine (T3); thyroxine (T4)
