Summary

The effects of Bacillus licheniformis were studied in calves under experimental conditions. In the the first experiment B. licheniformis was added to colostrum of newborn calves for preventive purposes. In the second experiment B. licheniformis was added to milk replacer fed to calves with early diarrhoeic syndrome. In the third, field, experiment, the effects of B. licheniformis supplementation on weight gains and health status were studied. Within the experiments general health state, occurrence of scour, body weight, and selected metabolic indices were evaluated.
The administering of B. licheniformis had slight positive effect on the incidence of diarrhoeic syndrome in newborn calves. In most calves suffering from mild diarhhoea B. licheniformis supplementation resulted in their recovery without any additional treatment. The results of the field experiment showed moderate positive effect on weight gains in the treated animals. These findings suggest positive preventive effects against diarrhoeic syndrome in newborn calves, and therapeutic effect during early stages of diarrhoea.
