Summary
Degenerative joint disease is a common disease that, depending on its aetiology, can afflict animals of all ages. It can by classified as primary and secondary. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects on degenerative joint disease when treated with Traumell S 2 intra-articular injections of 2 ml per week and 2 Depo-Medrol intra-articular injections of 1 ml (40 mg of methylprednisolone acetate) as an initial injection with a second one at the end of the therapy period. Both drugs were injected one by one at the same time. Fifteen dogs were treated for five weeks with 10 Traumell S and 2 Depo-Medrol intra-articular injections. During the 9-week-long observation period the efficiency of both drugs was evaluated based upon the improvement in the lameness of the affected joints. The results of the present study show that intra-articular treatment with Traumell S and Depo-Medrol is a cheap and effective means for the palliative treatment of degenerative joint disease and can be used in practice.
