Summary

Our work focused on the observation of the oviduct in ewes during puerperium after carbetocin (Depotocin-Léčiva) treatment. Twenty-four Slovak merino sheep 3-4 years old and weighing 40-45 kg were used in the experiment. The animals were divided into two groups. The experimental ewes (n = 12) were administered 0.07 mg carbetocin (Depotocin, Léčiva) after lambing at h 24 and 72. The first dose was given intramuscularly (i. m.), the second one was given subcutaneously (s. c.). The control ewes (n = 12) were administered a saline solution at the same intervals. The animals of the both groups were slaughtered on days 7, 17, 25, and 34 postpartum (n = 3). The measurement of the left and right oviduct weight in both groups revealed significant differences (P < 0.05) on day 17 postpartum. Significant differences in oviduct length between both groups were found on day 25 (P < 0.05) postpartum. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in secretory and ciliary cells between both groups were recorded on day 34 postpartum. The results of the evaluated parameters extend and update knowledge about oviduct in sheep postpartum and are an important part of continous control of reproductive activity.

Key words: puerperium; ewe; oviduct; epithelium; secretory cells; ciliary cells
