Summary

Morphometric parameters of the thyroid gland, namely the height of follicular epithelial cells and the diameter of thyroid follicles were compared with histological observations of the thyroid gland after a chlorinated water intake of 1.8 mg.l-1 chlorine for 4 weeks and 3 months in healthy lambs and after a daily intake of carbimazole at 35 mg per day and animal for one year in healthy bitches. A significant increase (P < 0.01) in follicular epithelial cell height was observed after an intake of chlorinated water for four weeks and three months compared with the control group. Histological observations reveal cuboidal or taller, cuboid cells in smaller follicles after an intake of chlorinated water for four weeks and three months compared with the control groups. A significant decrease (P < 0.01) in the diameter of the thyroid follicles was found after an intake of chlorinated water for three months compared with the control group. Histologically the majority of smaller follicles was found after an intake of chlorinated water for three months as compared with the majority of larger and medium follicles in the control group.
A significant increase (P < 0.01) in follicular epithelial cell height and a significant decrease (P < 0.01) in the diameter of thyroid follicles was observed after a daily intake of carbimazole compared with the control group. Histological observations reveal tall, cuboid epithelial cells in small and medium follicles and the majority of small and medium follicles after a daily intake of carbimazole compared with the control group. These results indicate that the morphometric indicators of the thyroid gland and the histological observations on the thyroid gland are moderately comparable but that morphometric quantification is a more sensitive method. Other histological signs in the thyroid gland after chlorinated water intake and the intake of carbimazole were not seen.
