Summary
An examination of the jejunum showed that S-l00 protein immunoreactivity was observed exclusively in the neuroglial structures aligned with the non-immunoreactive nerve cells. Positivity was seen in the the glial cell bodies as well as in their processes. Two forms of the S-l00 protein immunopositive structures were identified. The ganglionated and aganglionated forms were localized in three layers of the gut wall. In the muscle layer and the submucous layer, a ganglionated form was present, whereas in the mucosal layer, only a reduced aganglionated form was observed. Short positive fibres were observed only at the base of the intestinal crypts.
Key words: S-100 protein; jejunum; Japanese quail; immunohistochemistry
