Summary

The total antioxidant status (TAS) was investigated in the blood serum of 48 chickens after gamma irradiation at doses of 2 and 5 Gy. The TAS was determined 6, 24, 48, and 72 hours after irradiation. The results show that TAS was nonsignificantly elevated 6 hours after irradiation with both doses of gamma rays. Twenty-four and 48 hours after irradiation, TAS had decreased. The TAS increased again 72 hours after irradiation with both doses of gamma rays. Significant differences were found only in chickens irradiated with 5 Gy of gamma rays. There was a significant difference between the groups 48 hours after irradiation and the control group (p < 0.05), 72 hours after irradiation and the control group (p < 0.05), 48 hours after irradiation and 6 hours after irradiation (p < 0.01) and 72 hours after irradiation and 6 hours after irradiation (p < 0.001).

Key words: blood serum; chicken; gamma irradiation; total antioxidant status
