Summary
Bovine viral diarrhoea is a disease of cattle affecting the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and reproductive systems, with serious economic consequences. There is only limited information about the situation in Slovakia concerning the presence of BVDV specific antibodies on cattle farms. In our study, a high incidence of BVDV specific antibodies in selected Slovak regions was discovered. Out of the 46 herds examined, on 14 farms serologically positive animals represented more than 90 % of animals examined, on a further 14 farms 71-89 % were seropositive. Positive readings of 50-70 % were found on 13 farms and on only 5 farms positive animals represented less than 50 % of the animals examined. These results are regarded as alarming because of the presence of PI animals in the herds and the secondary consequences of the BVDV infection.
