Summary

The effect of the combination of Hypericum perforatum with each of four antibiotics against eight isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were examined by the checkerboard technique in vitro. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values of Hypericum perforatum extract, erythromycin, gentamycin, danofloxacin in combinations of the plant extract with each of these antibiotics were higher than individual MIC values of the plant extract and antibiotics tested alone. However, the MIC values of the plant extract and oxytetracycline in combination were not different from the MIC values of them tested alone.
According to the FIC index results which determined that the combinations of the plant extract with gentamycin, erythromycin, danofloxacin against the clinical isolates of S. aureus had an antagonist effect, the combination of the extract with oxytetracycline had an indifferent effect.
Further clinical studies are needed to determine the significance of these findings.

Key words: H. perforatum; MIC; combination; S. aureus
